Influencer marketing is a massively important step for businesses to get their products in front of new customers. Most consumers today are used to having a constant stream of ads pushed to them, making them almost completely oblivious and untrusting to conventional types of advertising. This makes it extremely hard for advertisers to stand out among their competition with their advertising.
So How Can We Get Around This
This is where influencer marketing comes in. Influencers have a unique connection with their fans, meaning that their fans usually have a lot of trust in the influencers they follow. This helps for your products to connect with their fans as well. Influencers can act as a sort of spokesperson for your company, allowing you to build trust with their audience and stand out more than just a regular advertisement.
If you were in the audience for your own ads, which ad would you trust more, the one that randomly pops up on your Instagram or Facebook feed, or the one that is being pushed to you by someone you already follow and listen to. Chances are that you answered you would listen more to the ad from someone you already follow.

What Should Influencer Marketing Do
The goal of influencer marketing is to transfer the trust that a fan has with an influencer to your company. Your goal as a marketer should be to show that trustworthy or popular people are using your product. Influencer marketing should also make your product seem cool or important in some way. People are constantly looking for something new and cool, and people fear being left out of trends. Making it seem like your product is something that everyone has will make the customers feel like they almost have to buy one or else they will be left out.
Try to show the influencer using your product in some way. Make sure that it looks like the product is making them happy or it is changing their life in some way that they couldn't go back to a world without it.
Influencer marketing should also be working in conjunction with your pre-existing advertising efforts. You should be marketing with influencers who are within the same audience that you are already advertising to, with the hope that a prospective customer will see both types of your advertising. This can be done through something like a retargeting campaign that retargets those who went to the link that the influencer originally shared, or it can be done by using that person as an "interest" when setting up your online ads. Showing both types of ads to your audience helps convert people who may not have originally made a purchase when they saw the first type of advertising.
